I made a spreadsheet. Of course I made a spreadsheet.

Three color-coded tabs, cross-referenced with her roommate’s list, flagged by size and weight for the car. I was thorough. I was organized. And I still forgot a mattress protector and showed up to move-in day without a single command strip.

This list is what I wish I’d had. Everything your daughter actually needs to turn four cinderblock walls into something that feels like home — organized by room, with the things that actually matter called out at the top.

The Bed — Where She’ll Spend Half Her Semester

Dorm mattresses are a crime against sleep. A good mattress topper is the single best purchase you will make. Do not skip it.

The Desk — Where the Next Four Years Take Shape

Her desk will either be a productive space she loves or a pile of things she shoves aside before class. A few good purchases make all the difference.

Closet & Storage — The Dorm Closet Is Not a Closet

I want to prepare you. The dorm closet is a narrow slot that would be generous as a pantry. Plan vertically, plan creatively, and buy all of the following.

#11 — Slim Velvet Hangers (50-pack)
Regular hangers will fill the rod completely. These triple the capacity overnight. This is the most dramatic small upgrade on this entire list.

Shoes, supplies, toiletries, snacks — the back of the door is prime square footage you are not using.

The most valuable real estate in the room. Use all of it. Seasonal items, extra supplies, the overflow from the closet that doesn’t fit anywhere else.

The Bathroom — Shared Floors. Bring Flip Flops. No Discussion.

Community bathrooms are a rite of passage. They are survivable with the right gear. They are not survivable without it.

#16 — Shower Caddy with Drainage Holes
Get one with holes in the bottom. Solid-bottomed caddies hold water and get moldy within two weeks. The drainage holes are not optional.

The Sick Kit: Before she leaves, pack a separate small bag — DayQuil, NyQuil, throat lozenges, instant soup packets, a heating pad, and a handwritten note tucked at the very bottom. The first time she’s sick and alone at school, she will call you crying. And then she’ll find the note. Pack it. Every single mom who has done this says it was worth it.

Making It Feel Like Home — The Part That Actually Matters

A dorm room is four walls and a window. What she adds tells the story of who she is and where she comes from. Don’t underestimate this section — it’s not decorating, it’s building a place she wants to come back to.

#20 — Warm White String Lights (33 ft)
One strand along the wall above her bed changes the entire feel of the room. This is the first thing to hang and the last thing to take down at the end of the year.

I am going to say something that will make some of you laugh and others nod slowly: do laundry with her at home at least twice before move-in day. Show her how to sort. Show her what settings mean what. Show her what the stain stick does and when to use it. Do not assume she knows. She does not know. This is how you find out on FaceTime in October when she’s turned everything pink.

Double as a hamper until laundry day, then go straight to the machine. Simple, effective, takes up no space.

The She’ll-Thank-You-Later List

These don’t have numbers but they matter just as much:

 

    • Extra phone charger — she will lose the first one by October, guaranteed

    • Battery-powered fan — dorms run hot and the thermostat is not hers to control

    • Earplugs and sleep mask — roommates keep entirely different hours

    • Double-sided tape and a small sewing kit — for fallen hems, buttons, and wall décor

    • A handwritten letter from you, sealed, labeled “Open on a hard day” — put it at the bottom of her bag before you hug her goodbye
